BP is the largest producer of oil and gas in the US, and the second largest in the world. We employ over 80,000 people and operate in over 80 countries worldwide. We own multiple refineries around the globe, a fleet of more than 80 ships and 25,000 miles of pipeline. We go exploring in arctic conditions, and steer remote vehicles on the bottom of ocean floors. We listen to new ideas every day, hoping that one will take us beyond the limits of what we know. And we do it all with one thing in mind: to provide heat, light and mobility to people without compromising the planet.
We are also among the world’s most progressive large enterprises. We are the first major energy company to acknowledge the need for precautionary action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Today BP continues to lead the effort to meet the world’s growing demand for sustainable, environmentally responsible energy
Here at BP, we’re proud of what we do, who we are and what we stand for. We invite you to consider us and Look Beyond the Limits.
The activities of our Exploration and Production business include oil and natural gas exploration and field development and production - the upstream activities - as well as the management of crude oil and natural gas pipelines, processing and export terminals and LNG processing facilities – the midstream activities.
Here at BP, you will be able to develop in many directions: there are opportunities to become a world-class engineering specialist; to pursue a career in project management or operations; and there’s even the chance to become a business leader. Within Exploration and Production, you are part of the Challenge program. This is program that provides experience of the complete engineering process – design, build and operate – through a series of 18-24 month placements. You’ll discover the complex, interrelated nature of energy as you work on real projects with real applications and real responsibilities. Everyone will go through a thorough training and development program where you’ll have a structured induction, access to a buddy and mentor, training, managed job rotations, site/field exposure, networking and planned development. Engineers are expected to gain professional accreditation that recognizes their engineering competence. With each role, there is a distinct training program.
Internship Program
As a first step, nothing prepares you better for a career with us than an internship. Our internship program provides hands-on, career-specific experience working full-time, usually during summer breaks. You’ll work on real projects that deliver tangible benefits and measurable results. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about and help to solve some of the most important issues we face. You will experience genuine teamwork, and work alongside highly qualified and experienced colleagues, while you work on live projects and operations, using the latest equipment and technology. Every year, we hire around 250 interns studying a range of disciplines into our summer internship program, many of whom go on to join us full-time when they graduate. Opportunities exist in all major areas of BP to explore your career aspirations and develop the technical and professional skills you will need for a successful career, while earning a competitive salary and learning about the world of business. Summer internships last from 10 to 12 weeks, usually taking place in the summer before your final academic year.
At the beginning of your internship we discuss with you the skills we hope you will develop and encourage you to keep a record of your progress. All interns are supported by a line manager who sets your objectives with you and ensures you have the training and equipment to succeed. A detailed and focused appraisal process is essential to ensure that you get the most from your experience. Your line manager will monitor your progress and discuss it with you throughout the internship, and specifically during a mid-internship appraisal. This helps you to see where you are succeeding and what else is needed before the end of the internship. Additionally, you will also be assigned a mentor who helps network you across BP, discusses your progress and can address any questions you have. Depending on your performance, you could be offered a full-time job following the end of your internship. The internship program also provides many opportunities for networking, social events and professional development.
